June 10, 2022 - “…May you lead the way in quality care provision; one that is timely, efficient, integrated and does not vary in quality on the account of socio-economic challenges…”, aspiring words from Dr. Lilibeth C. David, MPM, MPH, CESO I, Undersecretary of Health Facilities and Infrastructure Development Team of the Department of Health, the keynote speaker during the Certificate Course on Hospital Quality Improvement (CCHQI) Batch 3 course integration and closing ceremony. Usec. David highlighted that quality of care is the central theme of Universal Health Care (UHC) which increases the desired health outcomes for the people, client satisfaction, and financial risk protection. She also underscored that continuous quality improvement remains to be a relevant framework in plans, policies, and programs anchored on UHC and that improvement in the quality of healthcare is crucial in health systems strengthening, establishing strategies, formal mechanisms, and system structures to pursue, achieve and continuously improve organizations.
Thirty-four (34) healthcare professionals successfully completed the Certificate Course on Hospital Quality Improvement (CC HQI) Batch 3 during the Course Integration and Closing Ceremony conducted by the DAP Graduate School, in collaboration with the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health’s (HIGH) Teaching Unit, University of Heidelberg, Germany. The recipients belong to the different public hospitals in the country.
The extensive synchronous and asynchronous sessions which were conducted from March 18 to June 10, 2022, aimed to equip co-learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to ensure that health services are effective, safe, and focused on the needs of the patient; offer co-learners the opportunity to analyze the complexity of health systems and how quality improvement initiatives could strengthen health systems; and teach co-learners quality improvement tools and their application to analyzing problems, searching for solutions and implementing programs in their respective settings.
The virtual event was also graced by Atty. Engelbert C. Caronan Jr., DAP President and Chief Executive Officer, and Dr. Lizan E. Perante-Calina, Dean of the DAP Graduate School. President Caronan Jr. and Dean Calina warmly congratulated the co-learners for successfully completing the course. Both highlighted that as new graduates of the course, they hope that the co-learners can be part of the constituency of healthcare decision-makers and implementers who will continuously promote quality improvement in their respective areas of assignment. Also present were CC HQI Faculty Dr. Norma Lange-Tagaza, Dr. Sylvia Sax, Dr. Maria Linda Buhat, and Dr. Bien Eli Nillos.
Messages from the co-learners were delivered by Dr. Peter John s. Cuerpo, Medical Officer IV, Casimiro A. Ynares Memorial Hospital, and Dr. Maria Fatima Doce, Medical Officer IV, San Jose District Hospital, wherein they shared their learning about the importance of starting improvement from one’s self and realized how hard it is being in the shoes of medical center chiefs who need to utilize different quality improvement (QI) tools to keep the hospital system going. They also emphasized that as QI practitioners, they must not be overwhelmed with the small details, everybody can make mistakes, and one must take a step back, in order to truly appreciate the small good changes that have been achieved. They also added that hospital quality is about the people, a client-centered one and all hospital structures and policies must ultimately lead to providing good quality care to patients by being empathetic, accountable, and becoming a high-quality healthcare provider. On their final note, they mentioned that small changes, if done with consistency, can bring major changes.
CC HQI is supervised by Ms. Nikki Billedo, HGSPC Program Manager; and managed by Mr. Mark Rex Jayson Atole, CCHQI Learning Manager, Mr. Gerald Macabinquil, and Ms. Marie Isabelle Adrales, CCHQI Learning Associates.
